However, the media can often change the genius loci or place to make it sound more appealing. This can be seen with the rural idyll. The media have often presented rural areas as a safe no problem place, whereas in reality it has high crime and unemployment levels which the media does not show. Therefore, outside is visiting rural areas are often surprised when they find out what it’s really like.

This is far better than experiencing the place through the media because this way the person could have an accurate perception about a place as they are better able to understand the genus loci which is often hard to convey in the media. Also, they are more likely to develop a strong emotional attachment if they have a topophhllic mindset which means a stronger bond is formed the longer they stay
