Spatial distribution- these can happen at all plate margins across the world.
Magnitude- the amount of energy that is released will depend on how long the plates have been locked in place. The longer the lock position, the amount of pressure increases which when the play moves is suddenly released.
Frequency- earthquakes happen all the time almost everyday approximately 50 a day but most are not noticeable.
Predictability- Earthquakes can be predicted because of the sudden nature of the slip motion of the place. Those size oh metres can be used to measure if there are micro earthquakes prior to the main earthquake. This can be evidenced in Mount Nyriagongo where after the 2002 eruption monitoring increased and have predicted another earthquake soon.
Risk management
- Adaptation- emergency supplies, evacuation routes, living on highland
- Prevention- creating avalanches through controlled explosions, increased concrete paving to prevent soil liquefaction
- Preparedness- having monitoring in place, increasing education amongst civilian populations regarding what to do, having trained workers.
